DEMO: Solving by factoring
Worked examples
- x2−7x+12=0⇒(x−3)(x−4)=0⇒x=3 or x=4.
- x2+2x−8=0⇒(x+4)(x−2)=0⇒x=−4 or x=2.
- x2−16=0⇒(x−4)(x+4)=0⇒x=4 or x=−4.
Key points
- Find two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to −5.
- −2 and −3 work, so (x−2)(x−3)=0.
- Find two numbers that multiply to −12 and add to 1.
- 4 and −3 work, so (x+4)(x−3)=0.
- This is a difference of squares: a2−b2=(a−b)(a+b).
- (x−3)(x+3)=0.
